The UAE is undertaking several projects to develop the road and transportation system in time for Expo 2020. Notable among them is the 'Masar 2020', also known as the 'Route 2020' project.
Airports
The nearest airports to Expo 2020 Dubai are Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), which is about 24 kilometres from the Expo site and Dubai International Airport (DXB), which is about 54 kilometres from the Expo site. People of determination (those with special needs) receive complimentary parking for two hours at all terminals at Dubai International Airport. The parking ticket needs to be validated at the terminal. There is free parking at Al Maktoum International Airport for all passengers. There are prioritised drop-off areas for passengers requiring assistance at both the airports.
Metro
The Dubai Metro Red Line takes you from the city of Dubai to the entrance of Expo 2020. Metro stations have tactile paving to facilitate access for blind or low-vision passengers. All stations have wheelchair access either via step-free routes or lifts.
Plan your trip by metro with the S’hail app, available on App Store, Google Play and AppGallery.
Expo Rider and RTA buses
Get to and from the Expo 2020 site via a dedicated public bus service: Expo Rider. It’s free of charge for Expo 2020 visitors and you can board it from different locations in Dubai and other emirates.
Just remember where it drops you off as you will have to take the return trip from the same gate. Alternatively, you could choose to take one of RTA’s standard buses for a fee.
Taxi
Dubai’s taxis can be booked by phone or the Careem and Uber apps. Through the Careem app, you can also book ‘Hala Taxi’, which is Dubai’s most affordable taxi. There will be a starting flat fee of AED 20 for rides originating from the Expo site. Phone numbers for taxis in Dubai are:
Parking
Car parks will operate from 8:30 am to 1:30 am on weekdays and up to 2:30 on weekends and special days. There are three dedicated accessible parking zones for people of determination at Expo 2020. Only those with a dedicated permit issued by the UAE’s authorities can park their cars in that area.
Overseas visitors can apply for a temporary parking permit from Road and Transport Authority (RTA) with their passport, visa, photograph, proof of Dubai address and either the parking permit from the home country or evidence of disability.
Parking shuttles
Standard parking shuttles will operate from all car parks ensuring that you don’t need to walk more than 600 metres from your vehicle to the gate. Shuttles will operate on a high-frequency basis while the parking zones are open. These shuttles can also provide ramped access and room for two wheelchairs.
Expo People Mover
Move around the main locations of the Expo 2020 site for free on high-frequency buses. All buses are accessible for families with strollers and people of determination.
Expo Explorer
Go on a unique sightseeing tour on the Expo Explorer train (accessible for wheelchair users).
Visit the Expo website for more information.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council has approved the five-years' plan for RTA which includes a bundle of projects to support Expo 2020. The projects include:
Masar 2020
The 'Masar 2020', also known as 'Route 2020' project reflects RTA's master plan for providing multiple options of integrated mass transit means comprising the metro, tram, buses and water transport towards realising RTA's vision of a safe and smooth transport for all.
Masar 2020 starts off at Nakheel Harbour and Tower Metro Station and extends 15 km (11 km elevated and 4 km underground) and includes 7 stations (5 elevated and 2 underground stations).
The project aims to serve average-to-high population density areas such as The Gardens, Discovery Gardens, Al Furjan, Jumeirah Golf Estate and Dubai Investment Park which together house about 240,000 people.
Constructing new road intersections
New roads and intersections would be constructed to ease traffic in and around the Expo site. This includes the Dubai-Al Ain interchange connecting the Al Yalayis road, Jebel Ali-Lehbab road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed road and the University City road. In addition, there will be several intersections and roads surrounding Expo area and building parking spaces for 44,000 vehicles adjacent to Al Rashidiya and Dubai International Airport intersection.
Other projects
Latest technologies in smart mobility such as cable car and self-driven smart cars would be employed. Cycling routes and lanes would be introduced. Other landmark projects include the AED 10-billion Al Mamzar beachfront project, Bluewaters Island, Dubai Creek Harbour, Dubai Water Canal and Dubai theme parks amongst others.
