Increased exposure to sunlight during the summer months makes caring for eye health all the more important in order to protect them from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays. Excessive exposure to sunlight can cause eye dryness and inflammation, and over time, may increase the risk of developing certain eye diseases.
The most notable preventive tools include certified sunglasses. It is recommended to select sunglasses that provide complete protection from UV rays (UV400), ensuring that the lenses are wide enough to cover the eyes and limit the entry of sunlight from the sides. Wearing wide-brimmed hats can offer additional protection for the eyes and face.
It is advisable to avoid direct exposure to sunlight during peak hours, typically between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Furthermore, maintaining proper hydration and drinking sufficient amounts of water daily is crucial, especially with the continuous use of air conditioning, while actively avoiding direct exposure to strong, dry air from these devices.
Children's eyes are more sensitive to UV rays and therefore require special care. Encouraging them to wear sunglasses and hats during outdoor activities is imperative. Sunlight reflected from water, sand, and road surfaces can increase the amount of UV rays reaching the eyes, making eye protection essential when driving or engaging in marine activities.
If symptoms such as persistent redness in the eyes, pain, extreme sensitivity to light, blurred or weakened vision, or increased tearing and discharge appear, it is recommended to consult an ophthalmologist to assess the condition and receive appropriate care. Taking simple preventive measures today helps maintain eye health and quality of life in the future.
