As our economy and population continue to grow, so do our energy and water needs. Ensuring that these resources are used efficiently is therefore becoming an essential part of the UAE's readiness for the future. Development depends not only on our ability to secure additional resources, but also on the value we derive from the resources available to us. This shifts the question from "How much new capacity do we need to produce?" to "How can we meet growing demand more efficiently, reduce waste, and maintain service quality and continuity of growth at the same time?" This shift in thinking places efficiency at the heart of decision-making.

At the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, we view demand-side management as an integral part of planning for the future of energy and water-not as a temporary awareness campaign or a responsibility that rests solely with consumers. Efficiency starts with policies and standards and extends to buildings, facilities, and technologies that enable us to monitor consumption and reduce waste.

In line with this approach, the UAE launched the National Energy and Water Demand-Side Management Program in 2020. Over the past five years, energy and water efficiency programs have contributed to reducing more than 25 million tons of carbon emissions and generating financial savings of more than AED 9 billion. By 2050, the national pathway aims to reduce energy consumption by 42-45% and water consumption by 50%, compared with projected demand trajectories.

These targets are not about limiting growth; they are about generating greater value from every resource we use. Every unit of energy or volume of water we prevent from being wasted reduces costs and pressure on supplies, while supporting more efficient and sustainable growth.

The question remains: How can we transform efficient consumption from an everyday practice into a lasting national culture?
